Manchester City’s very own Gareth Barry is hanging on by his fingernails and may well travel with England to South Africa after all.

Barry is still nursing ankle ligament damage following City’s Premier League game against Tottenham on May 5th, and is still unable to train. However, in an effort to recover in time the 29-year-old midfielder has been doing what it takes to book his flight to this years World Cup, and that includes sleeping in an oxygen tent.

According to England’s website FA.com the Italian coach has previously taken a strong line on injured players, but is prepared to give Barry more time to prove his fitness.

‘Gareth Barry is a very important player. He has played in all the (qualifying) games for us,’ said Capello.

‘After this game (Japan) we have to decide if he will be with us in South Africa. He will be with us if we decide he can train normally after the first game, against the USA.’

Fingers crossed Gareth makes the final 23-man squad.
