Putting old rivalries behind them, Manchester City fans are praying that Wayne Rooney continues his rapid recovery and will figure in the Group stages of the World Cup. The results from our recent web poll were:

Do City fans think Rooney should play in World Cup?

YES: He may be Red, but he’s the best – 74%

NO: It’s still too risky – 19%

Maybe / Maybe Not – 7%

After yesterday’s toothless performance, England certainly need him to sharpen up the forward line as it’s hard to see how England are going to score from open play on the evidence of Paraguay game. On yesterday’s performance, His Wayneness should be partnering Peter Crouch, as Michael Owen looks way out of sorts.

United are reportedly unhappy about Rooney featuring in the Group stages, worried about long-term damage that might keep him out of all or part of next season’s Premiership campaign and have threatened to sue Sven personally should Rooney aggravate the injury – nice one guys…. that should help our preparation!

England’s next game is against Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday and unless Crouch and Owen are injured, Rooney doesn’t really need to be risked in that game, although a 20 minute run out would certainly give him some much needed match practices and infuriate Sir Alex at the same time. Now that Sven is de-mob happy, I doubt whether incurring the further wrath of Ferguson is likely to put him off playing Rooney, fully fir or not.

Come on Wayne, your country needs you. City fans are right behind you now, but don’t worry, normal service and rivalries will be resumed in August.
