10 years ago next week City drew 1-1 at Walsall in Football League Division One and you get the impression that despite all the blood sweat and tears that it has taken to bring the club back from the abyss, there is a belief out there among senior English footballing figures that how dare liddle ciddy and their diehard, frequently tortured fans be in a position to rock European football’s establishment, nevermind this country’s.
Not only certain sports hacks, particularly the hysterical rag biased Daily Mirror but Sir Bobby Robson, Alan Shearer, Steve Coppell, Ian Wright, Dave Whelan, Harry Redknapp, Joe Royle, Martin O’Neill with City obsessives Arsene Wenger and Taggart have now been joined by PFA Chairman Gordon Taylor in their condemnation of City’s attempts to bring the brilliant Kaka to England. Only Das Daily Mail’s Martin Samuel seems to have talked sense this week.
Taylor however, has addressed the situation with a difference, as he believes that the entertainment and escape for many of us that is football should ensure it reminds us all that the governments, bank leaders and company chief executives of this world have sent the financial world into meltdown as a result of their greed and mismanagement. Indeed, he rates this issue alongside combatting racism in it’s importance:
‘It is a bit bizarre that, in these times of credit crunch, we are talking about a club paying £100m for one player.
‘One of the things we have to ask is…is football sending out the right signals given the current financial climate?
‘Football needs to set a good example to the rest of the world, as we do with our anti-racism programmes and community projects.
‘Football cannot be immune from the credit crunch and whilst City are an exception to the rule, the game has a duty to show financial propriety at this moment in time.’
What next? Should His Highness Sheikh Mansour pack it all in and start building the hospitals and prisons that Britain needs?
I’m no financial expert or great thinker on the worlds problems. I still, as a lifelong City fan can’t get my head around all this let alone the past two years events. All I do know is that the fans who travelled to Walsall 10 years ago are starting to get some entertaining reward for their support at last and right now I can’t even begin to comprehend the impact all this is having upon the footballing world, let alone the society as a whole. What would other team’s with similar histories supporters do? What would the pontificating Wenger do in Mark Hughes shoes?
