Guess What? Reyna’s injured

In an injury-prone Blues career that is rapidly approaching Darren Anderton-like proportions, City’s own “Sicknote” has knackered his hamstring; this time for the USA in a friendly against Morocco ( which incidently they lost 1 – 0 …. always nice to see the Yanks lose !)

Having come back from a series of injuries during the Premiership season ( and previous seasons for that matter), he did at least manage 16 minutes of play before having to go off with a hamstring strain, putting his world cup plans in jeopardy.

One the one hand you’ve got to feel for the guy who always seems to be on the treatment table more than he is on the pitch, but on the other hand City’s midfield went awol in the latter part of the season, when a fit and fired-up Reyna might just have changed our season.

I know it’s not his fault; no players want niggling injuries that keep hanging around, but I think City need to consider carefully the injury record of potential signings otherwise we’re in for another season of patched up squads padded out with young kids, many of them playing out of position.

Every player picks up injuries some time in their career, but there are players who always seem to be crocked.Just look at Owen and Newcastle. You just knew when he signed that he’d be off the pitch more than on it and his absence was arguably one of the main reason’s for Souness’ early and swift demise.

As for Reyna, he probably needs to be careful that he doesn’t end up a cripple in later life; the cumulative affect of all these injuries does not bode well. At 33, we do need to ask, as does Reyna himself, whether he’s able to withstand the rigours of another Premiership season and I have to say I’m not optimistic.

I think Psycho needs to take some tough decisions here and not start the 2006/7 season with a bunch of aging, injury-prone players who are on big wages and whose persistent absences heap increasing pressure their teamates and on the manager for that matter.
