Harry On The Importance Of Signing Ade

City striker Emmanuel Adebayor’s career twists and turns are about to see him thrust into the London spotlight once again. Over to Harold Redknapp to calm the waters…

‘Arsenal fans hate him so Tottenham fans will love him. He’s got an advantage by upsetting them. He’ll be a hero.’

Judging by what we witnessed at City early doors after Mark Hughes signed him, the Togolese forward has the potential to have a huge impact which could result in the player proclaiming love between himself and the Spurs fans. Similar sentiments were expressed in Madrid during his last loan spell. Harry again:

‘If he comes and his head’s on, he can be fantastic. It’s a loan deal anyway, so you can’t go wrong. He was fantastic against us for Real Madrid, we couldn’t handle him. If he’s at it and really wants to play then he could be sensational.’

He’s not wrong there. Adebayor’s infamously berkish Eastlands charge towards the Arsenal support after scoring, not dissimilar to a Thierry Henry Highbury Spurs stare out, underlines his leaning towards the hatstandish that Mancio would never tolerate. Redknapp said:

‘He rang me after I stuck up for him. I said he shouldn’t have run to the fans but they were giving him almighty abuse all game. What are you supposed to do? You stick it up them, which is what he did.’

Ouch! In later months, Adebayor received tremendous support from Manchester City throughout terrible circumstances despite his inability to reach the level of consistent team effort demanded by Roberto Mancini. It’s hoped in Manchester that he will remember that fact the next time he speaks to the press. But the signs aren’t good. He’s already refused to train at Carrington since the squad re-assembled.

However, his presence back in the Premier League is sure to add spice to an already promisingly competitive season.
