‘He has trained’ – Pep Guardiola gives injury update on Man City player

|

Manchester City travel to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon and Phil Foden could make his return from a foot injury after Pep Guardiola gave a positive update in Friday’s pre-match press conference.

The 22-year-old was an unused substitute in City’s 4-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur (January 19), missed their 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers (January 22) and was absent for their FA Cup win over Arsenal (January 27), but Pep says he could be back after training without issue in the week.

When if Foden could feature against Spurs, Guardiola replied: “Yes I think so. He has trained well these last two days.” Foden has made 27 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring nine goals with four assists.

The England international has been short of form, with only one goal and zero assists in the league since October, so he has a lot to prove. Guardiola was seemingly critical of Foden’s attitude in training last month too, so things haven’t been going well since the World Cup ended.

Foden started the season in great shape with six goals and three assists from his first nine league games, but he’s fallen way short since. The 22-year-old hadn’t been consistently starting matches for a while either, so it’s unlikely he’ll be thrown into the deep end on Sunday.
