‘He might consider leaving’ – Man City defender tipped to join Real Madrid by 2024

|

Joao Cancelo has been outstanding for Manchester City this season, scoring two goals with five assists from 14 games in defence, but Kevin Campbell believes he could leave within two years if the Sky Blues win the Champions League.

The 28-year-old is a regular under Pep Guardiola and is one of City’s most important players, but Real are showing an interest in Cancelo and Campbell wonders if he would actually turn them down if they made an official bid.

When asked if the Portuguese international would consider joining Real, he told Football Insider: “I think (he) would. I suspect Cancelo might consider leaving in the next two years, especially if they get the Champions League.

“This Man City project needs a Champions League on the sideboard and the players recognise that I’m sure. If they do it, players like Cancelo might think, ‘I’ve won everything at Man City. It’s time for a fresh challenge.’

“For Real Madrid, it would be great to get him. He would be perfect for them. Can they get him? I think it’s possible. A lot will rely on whether City can win the Champions League in my opinion.

Although Dani Carvajal has been a regular at Real this season, making 11 appearances from a possible 13, Los Blancos are reportedly sizing Cancelo to be his replacement.

City have the 28-year-old tied down until 2027 and have no intention of letting him go, however, so a move away won’t be granted unless Cancelo requests a transfer.

Cancelo put pen to paper on a five-year deal in February, so he surely won’t be considering a move away just yet. And in the next two years, he’ll be 30 years of age, so he wouldn’t be a long-term replacement for Carvajal
