Sergio Gomez has yet to start a Premier League game since joining Manchester City from RSC Anderlecht over the summer, but Vital Man City predicted he’d get more opportunities as the season goes on due as Pep Guardiola doesn’t have another left-back.
Frank McAvennie disagrees, however, and believes the 22-year-old has ruined his chances of playing under Pep Guardiola after being sent off in their last Champions League group game. Gomez was red-carded in City’s 0-0 draw with FC Copenhagen and was an unused substitute in their 1-0 defeat to Liverpool.

He told Football Insider: “Pep will not be happy with the red card. It was his chance to go and shine and he did not do it. He will not be happy. We might not see him again to be honest. I think that is how ruthless Pep is, you just might not see him again. I will watch that with interest.”
Gomez has made eight appearances in all competitions this season, amassing 316 minutes of playing time for City. Guardiola has preferred Joao Cancelo as a makeshift left-back, but Kyle Walker’s injury might force the 28-year-old to move to right-back, opening up a spot that Gomez can fight for.
Guardiola signed the Spaniard to replace Oleksandr Zinchenko who joined Arsenal this summer, but he didn’t bring in a more senior option to replace the suspended Benjamin Mendy. So City only have one recognised left-back and an over-abundance of centre-backs who can double up in the role.
McAvennie’s opinion that Gomez will struggle to play again may be a little farfetched, however, as his performances were promising until the red card. Guardiola doesn’t hold grudges so long as the player displays the right attitude too.
It’s far too early into Gomez’s career for him to be written off, especially as all the playing time in Europe was proof of Guardiola showing faith in him. He was let down against Copenhagen, but Gomez can bounce back.
