‘He won’t pick you’ – Man City man warned he could be dropped from World Cup squad

Kalvin Phillips was named in England’s 28-man squad for their upcoming internationals against Italy and Germany, but Frank McAvennie believes he’s fortunate to make the cut after a poor start to the season.

The 26-year-old has made only three appearances in all competitions since joining from Leeds United, all of which have come from the bench. Phillips has been a good servant for England in the past, but he probably doesn’t deserve selection based on how he’s begun this campaign.

McAvennie told Football Insider: “Kalvin Phillips is one who’s not done anything. Gareth isn’t going to pick (him). Southgate knows what he can do but unless you’re playing he won’t pick you.

“Phillips must be wondering what the hell’s happened. It was such a big move but he’s not playing. I would’ve looked at the midfield and thought ‘who am I going to replace’. I’d have thought about that before I took the money.”

Vital Man City frequently questioned how the 26-year-old would get into the City side when Rodri was fit, but it’s still early days. Pep Guardiola wouldn’t have signed Phillips without a plan for the season, and he’s known for his squad rotation, so the Englishman should eventually get his opportunity.

Phillips came off the bench in City’s 2-1 win over Dortmund, but he was only introduced in injury time. The Sky Blues lock horns with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, but it’s hard to see the 26-year-old starting ahead of Rodri unless injury struck.

Southgate isn’t blessed with an abundance of quality defensive-midfielders and Phillips hasn’t put a foot wrong for England, so his place in the World Cup squad should still be secure.
