‘He’s a good player’ – Joleon Lescott says ‘outstanding’ Man City defender has bright future

|

Manchester City travel to face Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon and Rico Lewis is expected to start ahead of Kyle Walker at right-back. The 18-year-old has been in fine form of late and was keeping two first-team players out of the starting lineup on merit, so it’s little wonder Joleon Lescott predicts Lewis will have a bright future.

The England U19 international has made 14 appearances in all competitions this season, eight of which came in the Premier League. Lewis didn’t feature a lot earlier in the campaign (3/14 PL appearances between August and November) but he’s one of the first names on the teamsheet now (5/6 PL appearances between December and January).

Lescott hailed the 18-year-old’s speedy rise to prominence and believes he looks “comfortable” in the starting lineup. The former City defender said in an interview with the Manchester Evening News: “The system the first-team play suits Rico.

“He’s probably the most comfortable (and) hasn’t looked out of place. He’s shone at times (and) has stood out. Lewis is going to have a top career because he’s a good player. He’s very young and he’s got a long way to go, but I’m sure his future is going to be outstanding.”

Pep Guardiola hasn’t used his youngsters as much as he did last season, but Lewis has been a real success story. He was named U18s Player of the Year in May 2022 and became a regular first-team just months later. Lewis has been in the matchday squad all season and worked hard enough to be rewarded with minutes from Pep. He hasn’t let his manager down.
