‘He’s a little better – Pep Guardiola delivers injury update

Although Kalvin Phillips has featured in City’s last two games, Pep Guardiola revealed ahead of Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers that he’s not 100%.

The 26-year-old has struggled for playing time and fitness since making the move from Leeds United and doesn’t appear to be at his peak condition as Manchester City get ready to travel to Molineux.

Guardiola said in Friday’s pre-match press conference: “Kalvin Phillips (who returned in midweek) is a little better.” The England international missed three consecutive league games in August due to injury but returned in September to play in both Champions League outings.

Phillips wouldn’t have been starting against Wolves even if he was match fit, as Rodri remains first-choice under Guardiola, so he’ll once again have to hope to get minutes from the bench.

It’s not been an ideal start to life in Manchester for Phillips and his England prospects are in jeopardy while he continues to miss out domestically, so chances might be few and far between.

He’s an excellent defensive-midfielder but has only been given mere minutes this season to showcase his ability.
