‘He’s been outstanding’ – Jamie Carragher hails ‘fantastic’ Man City youngster

|

Rico Lewis was one of many players who impressed in Manchester City’s 4-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur and earned the plaudits of Jamie Carragher. The 18-year-old started at right-back ahead of Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo and didn’t let Pep Guardiola down.

He was diligent in his defensive duties, making a key block as Tottenham came close to scoring a third goal, and he was effective going forward, drawing numerous fouls in possession. Lewis was also comfortable stepping into midfield and had the best pass completion of all his teammates.

Carragher said on Sky Sports: “It’s his tactical understanding to go into midfield. This lad has been absolutely outstanding every time he’s played. He was absolutely fantastic. He’s the perfect fit.” Lewis has made 12 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring one goal.

He was used sparingly at the start of the campaign, being handed sporadic substitute appearances in Premier League games City were winning comfortably. But Lewis is now one of the first names on the teamsheet and continues to vindicate the faith of his manager.

Walker made a cameo appearance against his former club while Cancelo was left on the bench, so Guardiola is making it clear how much he trusts the England youth international. City face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday and there’s every chance Lewis keeps his place.
