Man City player left out of matchday squad again, 0 league apps since October [Opinion]

Sergio Gomez was absent from the matchday squad as Manchester City enjoyed a 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon.

The 22-year-old was left out of Thursday’s 4-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur too and no injury was attributed to his absence, so it appears Pep Guardiola made the decision because he still doesn’t trust Gomez.

Since joining City on a four-year deal from RSC Anderlecht in August, the uncapped Spaniard has gone on to make 12 appearances in all competitions, grabbing one assist.

Gomez has amassed only 580 minutes of football across the board, finding himself behind Joao Cancelo, Nathan Ake and Aymeric Laporte in the pecking order, so his debut season isn’t going to plan. The 22-year-old has featured just five times in the top-flight, but all his outings have come from the bench.

Gomez hasn’t featured in the division since mid-October either. Guardiola played the left-back in five of City’s first seven league games this season but hasn’t used him since. The only opportunities Gomez has been given were in Europe and the domestic cups.

That could mean he plays against Arsenal in the FA Cup on Friday evening, but time will tell.
