Manchester City boss Mark Hughes left the JJB Stadium hopping mad with match referee Steve Bennett after watching his side go down 2-1.

Just after the half hour mark, the controversy started when Wigan’s midfielder Wilson Palacios fell down (like a big girls blouse) in the box under pressure from Javier Garrido and referee Steve Bennett pointed to the spot.

Man of the Match Amr Zaki converted the subsequent penalty leaving City fans and players sick to the stomach.

Hughes told the media post match…

“We have been beaten by a fantastic strike and a penalty that was no way a penalty.”

“So I’m disappointed with Steve Bennett’s performance because I thought he was in good positions to make key decisions.”

“He got the penalty wrong, there was a coming together but the lad has dived theatrically, and then he misses Richard Dunne clearly getting impeded in the opposite box, so we’re disappointed.”

Sparky finished off by saying…

“It was a stop-start game. I thought the tempo was bitty and there was no flow or momentum.”

Have your say

Steve Bennett (47) began his career way back in 1992 officiating games in the Football Conference. Should he consider going back and perhaps learn his trade all over again.
