Hughes & Messi Join The Debate

So this morning Mark Hughes is deemed by the Mail as having one last dig at City following the finalisation of his appointment at Fulham and Messi tells us we are 2 world class defenders away from the title (Express). These are much more refereshing items than the no-marks of yesterday telling us we can’t buy the title.

The Mail could have it’s perspective a little bit wrong because my reading of Mark Hughes’ comments are not considered to be having a go at City but an explanation of the effect that the changes had on him as City’s Manager plus the realisation that what he was building may have looked good at the time to him and the Fans, but was not going to be quick enough. Mark clearly believed in what he was doing and believed he was on track. I for one wish him well in 36 Premier League matches next season.

I like the photo too. Is it really Al-Fayed or is it Tim Healy?

Lionel Messi throws his hat into the ring by saying that we need 2 world class defenders. I think City fans generally are aware of that with none of the current incumbents deemed to be suitable to carry that tag. It is interesting to hear him say that Tevez wanted to be loved and money did not come into it, so City can’t buy the title and Fergie Can’t Buy me Love.

Messi’s comments are more balanced than those of Kalou & Koscielny yesterday as he discusses the areas in which City could excel and areas where we look (to him) weak. Plus of course he is one of the world’s best players and we are more likely to listen to what he has to say than the comments offered yesterday. He clearly has respect for Toure Yaya and will probably miss the protection he afforded at the Camp Nou. It will be interesting to see. He sees Silva & Tevez as the main threat, as we probably do and if they both stay healthy this could be a goal production machine, especially if Adam Johnson maintains his rise on the opposite side of the field.

It’s all building up nicely and although many of our World Cup players have stayed at Carrington to upgrade their fitness tonight’s test at Dortmund will be a tough examination.
