Manager Manuel Pellegrini has said he felt that Manchester City opened the Premier League campaign today against Newcastle in a humble but hungry mood.

Goals at the end of each half from David Silva and Sergio Aguero gave us an opening day two nil victory and the gaffer told the Official Site that he was delighted with our mentality over the course of the 90 minutes.

‘It was very important for us to start winning this season. We played with two H’s – we were humble and were hungry – we need both if we want to keep winning titles. If we want to keep winning titles, if we want to improve on what we did last year, the attitude is so important from the start to the end.’

Pellegrini did accept that as the game wore on, you could certainly see tiredness creeping into our play, but he was insistent that this is normal for the first few competitive games especially given our disrupted pre season endeavours owing to extended player breaks following the World Cup – so it’s certainly not something he’s concerned about as he knows the players on show will be better next week following this game and those players not selected to play a part will be better next week anyway because of the additional training.

Speaking himself after the game, striker Edin Dzeko also spoke of the importance of getting off to a winning start, explaining.

‘It’s always good and important to start with a win. We knew it would be tough but we gave everything and I think we deserved the win. I’ve very proud that we managed to win this game and I want to thank our fans because I thought they were brilliant once again today.’
