‘I feel sharp’ – Man City player gives injury update ahead of England v USA

|

England lock horns with USA in their second World Cup group game on Friday evening and Kyle Walker has announced himself fit for the clash at Al Bayt Stadium. As per the London Evening Standard, he told reporters: “Yes (I’m fit). Does the manager agree? I don’t know.

England v USA: What will the outcome be?

USA to win

“I’m fit, I’ve been training now for two weeks and I feel sharp. I feel good. Obviously the manager has a tough decision to make in picking 11 players from 26.” The 32-year-old had spent weeks out with a groin injury which required surgery and was a doubt to make the World Cup.

Gareth Southgate selected him with the knockout stages in mind, however, and said he expected Walker to return before their final group game. Whether he’ll get the nod against the USA remains to be seen, as Kieran Trippier didn’t put a foot wrong at right-back in England’s 6-2 win over Iran.

Southgate is a big fan of Walker and wouldn’t have named him in England’s World Cup squad to sit on the bench, but it makes little sense to change a winning team unless injury struck one of his starting players.

There is a small chance that Southgate could make a change in formation to allow a third centre-back, but it’s more likely that Walker will remain on the bench. The eleven that thrashed Iran should be trusted to get the job done against USA.
