Midfielder Frank Lampard has been in the press this week, and he’s covered a variety of topics from Manchester City heading in the direction of a Champions League victory and even down to saying that Gareth Bale is ‘too nice’ but I’m not sure anybody is interested by that.

Speaking to FIFA.com the 36 year old explained about our Champions League hopes.

‘This is a trophy every big club needs in their collection and, the way City are heading, it is one that will happen at some point. These sorts of games are the ones you have to win if you are going to on and win the competition.’

The game in particular is our last 16 tie against Barcelona following the Newcastle match this weekend, and Lampard went on to say that having come close during his time under Chelsea – before finally lifting it back in 2012 – he knows it was ‘undoubtedly the best night of my career to date’ and he backs the players we have at the club as having the quality to be able to taste that for themselves in the very near future, if not this season.

‘I’d love to see City do the same and I think it’s the club’s next step. There will be disappointments along the way and I know that there have been some hard times in the competition in recent years – but that’s what happens when you are up against the best. We have to be on the ball for both games against Barcelona because you’re playing against such high quality that one lapse of concentration will cost you the game.’

In other interview’s Lampard has also waded in on the current offside rule controversy and what constitutes ‘interfering with play.’

‘There isn’t a 100% rule, which is what we’ve seen in the last week. We can all talk about offside and disagree because there’s no conclusive rule. But if someone is affecting play – and the one for Porto was affecting the goalkeeper’s dive – then it’s offside. That was the right decision. The Rooney one on Monday night (FA Cup Preston) was the wrong decision.’

Lampard goes on to say that you can’t blame the referees as they pass on the ‘directives’ but in many ways the examples you get given can be that vague in looking for a black and white decision ‘I don’t think they’re completely sure either.’

And if the referee’s don’t know what hope do any of us have.
