‘It’s plausible’ – Transfer expert says 27 y/o Man City man could join PL rivals if ‘spot opens up’

Raheem Sterling could be on his way out of Manchester City this summer as his contract is up in 2023 without a new deal being on the horizon and Chelsea appear to be leading the race for his signature.

The 27-year-old wanted out of City last summer but didn’t have a viable suitor to join, so it remains to be seen if he considers the Blues as a better option. Dean Jones believes a move is ‘plausible’ if a ‘spot opens up’ at Chelsea.

Sterling isn’t happy with Pep Guardiola’s squad rotation and could make the switch if he’s given assurances over playing time. Jones says his impressive goal record could seduce Chelsea into making a move as they need to improve their attack.

He told Give Me Sport: “If two leave, then you imagine two spots open up, so whether that’s Raheem Sterling, Ousmane Dembele, both potentially, I think it’s plausible, and I think that it’s really interesting to now look at how Chelsea look to get more goals in their team.

“Raheem Sterling, he does have a pretty good goal output for somebody who’s not an actual centre-forward, and I think that’s potentially something they’re looking at here.”

Sterling scored 17 goals with nine assists from 47 games in all competitions this season, but he started only 23 Premier League games from a possible 38 and started just five Champions League outings from 12, so his frustrations with the rotation are fair.

But City are challenging for major trophies, so it would be a big call to leave.
