‘It’s very clear’ – Journalist tips Man City player to be dropped at the World Cup

Ederson Santana de Moraes has been called up to the Brazil squad ahead of this month’s World Cup in Qatar, but Tim Vickery told the Blue Moon Podcast that the 29-year-old isn’t likely to start in their opening group game.

Brazil lock horns with Serbia at the Lusail Stadium on Thursday, November 24, but Vickery predicts Liverpool shot-stopper Alisson Becker will get the nod over Ederson.

He said: “The coach says he’s got three goalkeepers on the same level, which is Alison, Weverton of Palmeiras and Ederson. But really, we know what the hierarchy is. Weverton is three, Ederson is two and Alisson is one. We’ve seen that very clearly this year – Brazil have played ten games (and) Ederson has just played one of them.”

Ederson has made 19 appearances in all competitions for Manchester City this season, conceding 18 goals with nine clean sheets. The 29-year-old made his debut in 2017 as a 24-year-old but has only made 18 caps for Brazil in five years, conceding eight goals with 11 clean sheets. He’s won 12 times and drawn four.

Ederson has been an unused substitute 40 times for Brazil and hasn’t turned out for the Samba Kings since February. In fact, since Brazil’s Copa America final defeat to Argentina in 2021, Ederson has represented his country only twice.

Alisson, on the other hand, has made 57 caps for Brazil after making his debut as a 23-year-old. He’s missed only three of their last 13 internationals, so Vickery is right to suggest the 30-year-old is first-choice under Tite.
