Writing in a column for the Manchester Evening News, journalist Tyrone Marshall has hinted that the Sky Blues may have their future centre-back options already sorted out in both Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Eric Garcia – with the academy duo earning Pep Guardiola’s full admiration in the past.

Aymeric Laporte, who starred alongside departed club legend Vincent Kompany during the latter stages of last season, has been unable to replicate that form this time around after suffering from extensive injury issues.

This has prompted manager Guardiola to drop Fernandinho in at centre-half as much needed cover for the Frenchman, with the 34-year-old going on to, arguably, perform as one of our most consistent defenders this season despite it being his unnatural position.

Will Harwood-Bellis and Garcia become future first team stars?

Kompany’s departure, Laporte’s absences and the worrying form of both John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi has thrown a degree of precariousness around the future of our back line – but journalist Marshall has claimed that young Elite Development Squad members Harwood-Bellis and Garcia could hold the key to solving our defensive woes in future.

According to the MEN writer, both players are making strides towards the first team, which may steadily ease the burden City are feeling at centre-back right now.

Guardiola, who has long been an admirer of the duo, heaped praise on the pair following their display during the Sky Blues’ 3-1 Carabao Cup win over Oxford United back in December.

The Spaniard described them as ‘extraordinary‘, going on to state that he was ‘very impressed‘ with how they performed against fast and tall players.

Indeed, taking this into account, it appears our boss does rate them highly – and it’s not exactly unfeasible to consider them as potential future options.
