Journalist says Southampton defender is ‘long-term target’ for Man City

|

Despite loaning Joao Cancelo out to Bayern Munich in January, Pep Guardiola still has four defenders in the first-team who can operate at right-back (Kyle Walker, Rico Lewis, Manuel Akanji, John Stones), but the Manchester City manager might be planning for the future if reports are to be believed.

Malik Ouzia of the London Evening Standard says City are interested in Southampton’s Timo Livramento. The 20-year-old has made 32 appearances in all competitions since joining from Chelsea in 2021, scoring one goal with two assists.

Livramento rose through the youth ranks to the fringes of Chelsea’s first-team but never made an appearance at senior level until he left for the Saints 18 months ago. The England U21 international injured his anterior cruciate ligament in April, however, and hasn’t featured for Southampton since, so it’s a move might have to wait until he’s fully fit.

Livramento had a bright future before the injury and would have been fourth in the City squad for tackles (1.9 per game) and first for interceptions (1.7 per game) while boasting more successful dribbles (1.1 per game) than Riyad Mahrez (0.9) last season, so it’s little wonder City are keen.

Time will tell when an approach happens though.
