Journalists say Man City are ‘closely monitoring’ AC Milan star on deadline day

|

Manchester City aren’t a club that do a lot of business in January, but Jack Gaughan and Tom Collomosse of Mail Online believe the Premier League defending champions are considering a move for Rafael Leao before the transfer window shuts.

While acknowledging there is a small pool of players that fit the bill for Pep Guardiola, they believe City are ‘closely monitoring’ the AC Milan forward. Leao has made 27 appearances in all competitions, scoring nine goals with nine assists, so it’s easy to see why the Sky Blues would want him.

Vital Man City have explained countless times that a deal might not get over the line as Guardiola is overstocked in his position, so it’s hard to believe this latest report. Leao, while immensely talented, isn’t a player City have a fervent need to sign with Jack Grealish, Riyad Mahrez, Julian Alvarez, Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva and Cole Palmer on the books.

Milan won’t want to part company with the Portuguese international either, as Leao has been a terrific servant with 36 goals and 30 assists from 142 appearances since joining from LOSC Lille in 2019. The Rossoneri are only two points adrift of second-placed Inter Milan, so they can’t afford to lose key players midway through the season.
