Jovetic Takes Chance To Impress

Ahead of the AC Milan friendly last night, manager Manuel Pellegrini insisted that despite interest from Inter Milan, Stevan Jovetic would be remaining at the club.

The 24 year old Montenegro striker joined the club from Fiorentina back in 2013 for £22million but in an injury hit first season, he only started two league games for us, with a total of 18 appearances, but he did return six goals in that time although he often played fourth fiddle behind Pellegrini’s other strike options.

‘Stevan is working well with us. He is a very important player for our team. Maybe there are a lot of rumours about his future but Stevan will stay with us here.’

Pretty clear statement from the manager really, and it seemed the player wanted to prove him right, knowing his chances of figuring this campaign have been boosted by the unfortunate injury to Alvaro Negredo.

In the five one rout of AC Milan yesterday evening, Jovetic grabbed himself a brace in the game and performed admirably, certainly stating his cause for the coming campaign, and only an offside flag denied him a hattrick.

Speaking following the game, Pellegrini was forced to add.

‘With Stevan I think he had very bad luck last season. He had a lot of injuries the whole year. It’s very difficult for a player to have an important performance when he cannot play three games in a row. At the end of last season he started playing very well. Now that he works continually he will demonstrate why he’s here at Manchester City. I think he’s a very good player.’

If he keeps doing that, he’ll certainly be in contention.
