Are Man City making right decision extending player’s contract so soon? [Opinion]

|

Journalist Darío Montero (h/t Sport Witness) says Manchester City are meeting Julian Alvarez’s agent to negotiate a contract extension as reward for his form this season, but is it too soon to offer an improved deal?

The 22-year-old joined from River Plate in January 2022 and was loaned back to the Argentinean outfit until the end of the season. He joined City’s first-team this campaign and has made 24 appearances in all competitions, scoring nine goals with two assists.

And while Alvarez has played in all six of City’s Champions League group games while featuring in 14 of their 19 Premier League outings, he’s only started 11 times across the board. He won the World Cup with Argentina and has scored two goals in two games for City upon his return, but Alvarez still making his way in Manchester.

The 22-year-old has started just four league games and is still playing second fiddle to Erling Haaland while having four more years on his deal, so City needn’t rush for a player that’s only six months into being a first-teamer.

That being said, Alvarez earns £50k-per-week in wages which is among the lowest earners in the squad, so it could be argued that he deserves a payrise to reflect his role as second-choice goalkeeper Stefan Ortega takes home more money.

But until Alvarez is a regular in the starting lineup, should City wait on contract talks?
