Kevin Campbell says Pep Guardiola ‘won’t want to lose’ Man City’s ‘special’ player

Bernardo Silva continues to be linked with a move away from Manchester City as Barcelona can’t help but talk about him in the media. Despite the Catalan giants racking up over £1bn of debt, they’ve been busy in the transfer market and were recently linked with a £67m move for the Portuguese international.

Pep Guardiola had to convince the 27-year-old to stay when he wanted to join Barca and Silva went on to have one of the best seasons of his career, scoring 13 goals with seven assists from midfield in 2021/22. The decision was vindicated and Guardiola has been clear that he won’t be sold, so Barca may be wasting their time.

Kevin Campbell can’t see a move happening either and admitted his shock that Silva was close to a departure in the past. He noted that the 27-year-old is such a talented player and influential in the City team, so Guardiola will be desperate not to lose him.

Campbell told Football Insider: “He is involved in everything. He is the glue in the dressing room. Players like that are very valuable. I was surprised last summer when there was talk of him leaving.

It is amazing how he stayed and helped them win the league title. Players like him are worth their weight in gold. He is an absolute diamond on and off the pitch. He is special. Pep will not want to lose him, definitely not.”

Silva has made 250 appearances in all competitions since joining City from AS Monaco in 2017, scoring 48 goals with 50 assists, so he’s having a hand in a goal every 2.5 games on average. That’s an impressive return for a midfielder, so Guardiola would be foolish to let him go.
