Manager Manuel Pellegrini has denied suggestions that Vincent Kompany was dropped for the Leicester game last night.

Speaking to the press following the match with a number of omissions but Kompany taking the headlines he explained that he was simply ‘freshening’ the team up and allowing some players to have a bit of a rest.

‘Kompany didn’t start for the same reason Zabaleta, Fernandinho, Nasri and Dzeko weren’t playing. It was important today to refresh the team both mentally and physically. It was not a difficult decision – I felt we needed to refresh the team tonight. I felt it was a good moment to rest him.’

Elsewhere on the subject he’s also quoted as saying.

‘I don’t want to talk about one player. We will work Thursday and Friday, have the weekend free, and on Monday we are going to start working for the next game. We have the squad we want so it was a good moment to refresh the team. I thought about a lot of things which were the best team for today.’

I’m not quite sure how or why, but some outlets carrying the above quote imply that it’s been a major warning to all the players about maintaining their form – and further that Pellegrini has warned Kompany directly that he’s not guaranteed to regain his place this season.

Of course there’s no quotes to that effect but no doubt they have special ‘sauces’ feeding them this information.

The only other attributable quotes are Pellegrini saying that Kompany, and the others, took the decision ‘very well, without any problems’ but I suppose you can read into that transfer requests will be forthcoming now.

Admittedly form hasn’t been great and some players get picked out more than others, but dropped or dropped for a rest in football often is just that – it takes somebody out of the firing line for a brief period so they can focus – why that needs to be reported as ‘you aren’t getting your place back’ is beyond me….but on the bright side it gives me something to babble about.
