Hotshot City and Argentina goalsmith Sergio Aguero has been nominated for the legendary France Football and FIFA Ballon d’Or…

The mercurial 23 year old striker has been on fire since arriving in Manchester three months ago scoring 9 Premier League goals in 8 games. That’s one less than fellow nominee, united and Liverpool’s own Wayne Rugney managed all last season. The Stretford one sixer is the only Englishman to feature in the prestigious 23 man shortlist of whom the winner will be announced at a FIFA rave up in Switzerland on the 9th January.

No other English based players were named today other than Michael ‘Nani’ Jackson’s questionable inclusion. It’s also a bit weird to see erstwhile Emirates Bottlers captain Cesc Fabregas in the running.

Answers on a postcard please over why David Silva’s continued sheer brilliance is overlooked by the Barcelonanista.

Transfer request dalliance chancer Rugney being the sole Englishman listed should register alarm bells at the Football Association. Our very own Manchester City regularly field 5 to 6 English players week in, week out but that is becoming more and more of a rarity in the top flight.

Back to Aguero, and if he continues to go through the gears despite carrying a niggling groin injury, his extraordinary talent could yet see him run close his fellow countryman, the rag nemesis Lionel Messi for the coveted award. You won’t find many hacks ackowledging it, but Aguero made City’s breakthrough happen at The Etihad against Wolves last Saturday. It was his endeavour in charging down Wayne Hennessey’s clearance as opposed to a widely reported goalkeeping error that set up Edin Dzeko’s goal.

Ballon d’Or nominations:

Eric Abidal (FRA/Barcelona), Karim Benzema (FRA/Real Madrid), Sergio Aguero (ARG/Manchester City), Iker Casillas (ESP/Real Madrid), Cristiano Ronaldo (POR/Real Madrid), Daniel Alves (BRA/Barcelona), Samuel Eto’o (CMR/Anzhi Makhachkala), Cesc Fabregas (ESP/Barcelona), Diego Forlan (URU/Inter Milan), Andres Iniesta (ESP/Barcelona), Lionel Messi (ARG/Barcelona), Thomas Muller (GER/Bayern Munich), Nani (POR/Manchester United), Neymar (BRA/Santos), Mesut Ozil (GER/Real Madrid), Gerard Pique (ESP/Barcelona), Wayne Rooney (ENG/Manchester United), Bastian Schweinsteiger (GER/Bayern Munich), Wesley Sneijder (NED/Inter Milan), Luis Suarez (URU/Liverpool), David Villa (ESP/Barcelona), Xabi Alonso (ESP/Real Madrid), Xavi Hernandez (ESP/Barcelona)

France Football Magazine (la bible du foot)’s Ballon d’Or and the FIFA World Player of the Year award were fused in 2010.

The famous golden ball is awarded based on votes from coaches and captains of international teams across FIFA’s 208 federations and a panel of football journalists from around the world.
