Left Back has been a problem position for City, can these two options finally solve it? [Opinion]

|

It would be fair to say that Olexandr Zinchenko has gone above and beyond for Manchester City in recent seasons. The Ukrainian attacking midfielder has filled in at left back whenever his club’s required him to do so and he’s performed above admirably. One of Pep’s first signings in 2016, Zinchenko has earned the right to pursue opportunities to play in his natural position, the one he occupies for his country, whether that be in the Premier League, or on the continent.

For City, the main question is who replaces him? Brighton’s Marc Cucurella has worked his way into Pep’s thoughts with some standout displays in his maiden Brighton season, and would represent great value for money – given his attributes would see him fit seamlessly into the way City play. For all that Cucurella looks ideal on paper though, it would surely be prudent for City to target another full back to allow for some competition and vital cover over what is sure to be another marathon season. Injuries to Kyle Walker and Zinchenko at various points caused City more than a few headaches in the last campaign, with Joao Cancelo filling in on the opposite side and John Stones even filling in at right back on occasion.

With the imperious recent form of Cancelo, it may be tempting for Pep to go into the new season with him, Walker and a new LB only, but City should at least consider a move for Ajax’s Argentinian attack dog Nicolas Tagliafico, whose auspicious time in Amsterdam looks to be coming to a close with his contract due to expire in summer 2023.

Tagliafico’s rampaging runs and excellent end product would represent great value for money and provide another reliable option at full back when the inevitable injuries and suspensions that bite during the season come to pass. Turning 30 this year, he’s also far from finished at the top level and could play a key backup role in helping City get to that promised land of the Champions League. His vast experience in that competition would also be a good resource for someone like Cucurella to tap into and help create as strong a left side for City as the outrageous right back depth chart that is Walker and Cancelo.
