Both sides head into this Saturday dinner time clash at Anfield with a much needed International break.
An International break usually has a negative impact on the Premier League by breaking up the program and stopping a team’s momentum, however, both sides will gladly admit the break came at the right time, for much needed rest and a change in fortunes.
City head into the clash on the back of five consecutive draws. The Premier League winless streak for the blues dates back to September when the blues destroyed the Hammers. City have found it even more difficult to win on the road this year with their last win on their travels recorded in August against relegation favourites Portsmouth. However, with team’s faltering around them, mainly Saturday’s opponents Liverpool, City still have a perfect opportunity to break the top four.
Liverpool see this home clash as one to kick start their season, something a win against rivals Manchester United didn’t do. Having already lost five times this season, the home side can’t afford another slip up. Liverpool were early season title contenders, however, after injuries to key players, unrest between the owners and below par performances, Liverpool would do anything to regain their top four place.
Manchester City are without injured winger Martin Petrov, however, Mark Hughes might be able to count on Brazilian superstar Robinho, who is set to return from a three month injury. Other than that Mark Hughes has a full strength team to pick from. Who Hughes picks will be the talking point, with Craig Bellamy the only striker to score in nearly two months.
Liverpool’s injury problems have been mounting up over recent weeks, however, the home side are hopeful Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger are all back from their respective injuries. Some bad news for Liverpool is that goal machine, Fernando Torres is still likely to be injured and midfield duo, Yossi Benayoun and Albert Riera will both be missing with hamstring injuries.
This can be expected as a tight encounter with both sides desperately needing the win, Liverpool have home advantage so will go into the game as favourites, in a game that really is must win for Rafa`s side.
