Looking For Rhetoric

Former Leeds United player Eric Cantona has taken an opportunity to deliver a Manchester City teamtalk. We’re getting used to these straw clutching rag sound offs…

Scholes, Neville, Ferdinand, Taggart, Giggs and especially Evra have gone out of their way in the last couple of years to talk City and each and every time they come across as a weary, arrogant dynasty desperate to see the horror story of the liddle ciddy resurgence disappear. But as we reminded them after every close derby disappointment during that time, we will not go away.

City are right back in the rags faces for the Community Shield and there are more than a few seats shifting in the swamp boardroom at the very fact that it’s the hungry Blues who are imminent against a notoriously slow starting Ferguson squad.

For his US based part, Cantona like Beckham has felt compelled this summer to talk publicly about The Citizens. The end result being that he’s merely drawn more attention to Manchester City’s rise to European prominence and come across as another of the old rag guard trying to pretend that this isn’t happening.

Cantona has chosen the tired ‘Manchester united are a youth academy example to us all’ route:

‘I don’t know how City work. Maybe they are working on the academy. But today they want to spend millions to buy players to build a team. They have been successful because they won the FA Cup but if they only want to do that, they will not be as strong as Manchester United. United work on the long term, with young talent.’

Hopelessly out of touch drivel of course and that’ll be the same youth that Taggart abandoned in panic for a League Cup semi final with City two seasons ago, then…and the same youth focus that saw United fans exit Wembley en masse twice this year in record time such was their appreciation of the Glazer long term plan. There’s still nothing more tragic than listening to their ooh-ah’s and songs from years gone by. I digress.

Scholes, Giggs and co all arrived at the same time and can be best described as a one off if that’s what the New York Globetrotters man is driving it. Since then, sustained star performing academy graduates at the swamp have been few and far between.

There seems little point in detailing again the years that united repeatedly broke the English transfer record unchallenged or highlighting the achievements of the MCFC Academy.

No, better still to note Cantona’s pisspoor reading of the very real power shift in Manchester: ‘United are the best team’ he says.

Another one for the dressing room wall at Wembley, Mancio.
