Man City eye “outstanding” £172k-p/w star as Guardiola plots rebuild – Report

|

Following Man City’s superb 4-0 victory over Premier League champions Liverpool on Thursday evening, the Sky Blues show no sign of resting as Pep Guardiola reportedly plots a rebuild of next season’s title challenge – with the club now linked to Bayern Munich defender David Alaba.

Alaba, who has started 27 Bundesliga games for the German giants this season, is apparently seen as a prime defensive target by Guardiola alongside Napoli stalwart Kalidou Koulibaly – with the Guardian reporting that the two players a part of a summer revamp.

Should Man City sign Alaba?

Yes please, get the deal done

No, better options out there

Given Leroy Sane’s move to Bayern, alongside the departure of Vincent Kompany to Anderlecht and the impending exits of club legends David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho, Guardiola now apparently feels it’s time to transition the squad with marquee signings.

Defensively, City have had to cope without star defender Aymeric Laporte for huge portions of the season – forcing usual midfield titan Fernandinho to operate as a centre-back in his stead.

Now, plotting moves for both Alaba and Koulibaly, Txiki Begiristain and co attempt to fix those glaring defensive issues – with the Swiss left-back appearing as a notable target in particular.

The £172,000-per-week star, according to WhoScored, averages more tackles per game than both Benjamin Mendy and Kyle Walker whilst completing 90.7% of his attempted passes.

These numbers, while impressive, could highlight why Guardiola has allegedly pinpointed Alaba as a coup – with the Austrian international also being labelled as ‘outstanding‘ by Joshua Kimmich and ‘one of the best centre-backs in the world‘ when deployed in that position.

A versatile option who can seemingly operate both at centre-half and in the full-back area, a swoop for Alaba could arguably be worth the effort.
