Man City eye ‘unique’ player with more tackles than Dias and more interceptions than Rodri

Manchester City have John Stones, Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte, Nathan Ake and Eric Garcia at centre-back, but ESPN say Pep Guardiola wants to add Sergio Ramos to his squad.

The 34-year-old has an uncertain future at Real Madrid as his contract is up next summer and he’s yet to put pen to paper on an extension, but it remains to be seen whether City will win the race for his signature.

Ramos joined Real from Sevilla in 2005 and has gone on to make 666 appearances in all competitions, scoring 100 goals and supplying 40 assists. He’s won five La Liga titles, four Champions League crowns and two Copa Del Rey trophies, so he’d be a fantastic acquisition for City.

He’s made 13 league appearances this season, boasting more tackles (14) than Ruben Dias (7) and more interceptions (19) than Rodri (17), so it’s not a surprise why the Sky Blues are keen.

Spain manager Luis Enrique called the centre-back ‘unique’ and on a ‘different level’ in November 2020 and Guardiola is also a big fan of the defender. But Ramos may not be seeking an exit from the Santiago Bernabeu, however, as ESPN note that his priority is still to extend his contract at Real.

He’s technically able to speak to other clubs this month and could agree a pre-contract deal with a suitor, but it doesn’t appear the Spanish international has any interest in leaving.

City were reportedly keen to bring Ramos to England despite his advancing age and £312k-per-week salary, but they may have to turn their attentions elsewhere.
