According to a report from the Times, Man City have shortlisted Benfica captain Ruben Dias as a defensive target ahead of the looming summer transfer window – potentially joining the likes of Spurs and Liverpool in the hunt for his signature.
Dias, who has impressed in the Primeira Liga this season, starting 31 matches domestically and becoming a mainstay for Aguias, is currently on City’s transfer wish list alongside the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly and Jose Gimenez according to journalist Duncan Castles.
Who would you prefer as Kompany's heir?
The star centre-back, currently valued at around €100 million (£90.1 million) according to Portuguese outlet Record via Sport Witness, is reportedly willing to exit the Estádio Sport Lisboa e Benfica through the temptation of a larger salary – with manager Pep Guardiola recently scouting the player.
While our boss ‘scouts‘ the 23-year-old, it’s little wonder given his impressive numbers – with the 6ft 1 colossus averaging a noteworthy 88.3% pass success rate out from the back according to WhoScored.
City’s defensive lapses this season have arguably been the main cause for concern over a limp title defence, with Aymeric Laporte’s absences, the worrying form of John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi, the adaptation of Fernandinho and our lack of a replacement for Kompany all huge factors.
Now, after our successful CAS ruling last week, City can look ahead to make some much-needed improvements as the 2020/2021 campaign looms – and Dias appears firmly on the radar.
