Man City midfielder has uncertain future as CEO reveals ‘some players will leave’ [Opinion]

Yangel Herrera will soon return from his loan spell at Espanyol, but it doesn’t appear Pep Guardiola is considering integrating him in the Manchester City squad next season.

The 24-year-old has a good reputation despite being surplus to requirements at the Etihad Stadium, so Manchester Evening News say his sale is expected to fetch a tidy penny.

Herrera hasn’t made an appearance for the Mancunians since his 2017-arrival from Atletico Venezuela, so the writing has been on the wall for some time.

He’s been loaned out to New York City (February 2017 – December 2018), SD Huesca (January 2019 – June 2019), Granada CF (2019 – 2021) and Espanyol (2021/22), but it remains to be seen what City will do with him this summer.

Galatasaray are reportedly interested in another loan deal for Herrera, but a permanent deal might be preferred if Guardiola has no plan to use him in the first-team.

CEO Khaldoon Al Mubarak recently admitted there will be outgoings this summer, saying: “As you know, every season some players leave,” so this could be the Venezuelan international’s final year in Manchester.

CIES Football Observatory value Herrera at €13m (£11m) while Transfermarkt say he’s worth £16.2m, so the club should be making a profit if they find a suitor.
