Man City must pay £16.9m for midfielder with more goals and assists than Jack Grealish

Manchester City could be losing Ilkay Gundogan and Fernandinho in the same transfer window, so Pep Guardiola may need to start identifying potential replacements.

The Sky Blues have been linked with Barcelona’s Frenkie De Jong and Manchester United’s Paul Pogba, but Clarin (h/t Sport Witness) say City want Enzo Fernández.

Guardiola has already poached a talented youngster from River Plate in Julian Alvarez, but it appears he wants another promising Argentinean. Fernández rose through the youth ranks to River’s first-team, making 43 appearances in all competitions, scoring 10 goals with eight assists.

The 21-year-old is having a great season, scoring six goals and making five assists in 14 Copa de la Liga games, so he’s outperforming Jack Grealish (three goals and three assists in 26 Premier League games) and would improve the City squad.

Clarin say River won’t accept a penny below his €20m (£16.9m) release clause, but he might end up a bargain acquisition given how well this season is going. Guardiola has a tough task on his hands to replace a goal-getter and frequent assist-maker like Gundogan, but Fernandez looks to be a player of his ilk.
