Man City player closes in on Arsenal move, name trends on Twitter as reunion looms

|

It’s no secret that Gabriel Jesus is nearing a move from Manchester City this summer, but it’s surprising that Arsenal are leading the race for his signature.

The 25-year-old has won four Premier League titles, four League Cups and one FA Cup in his five years at City, but Gary Jacobs of The Times says he’s willing to trade it all in to reunite with Mikel Arteta. His name has been trending on Twitter all day too.

Arteta was Jesus’ assistant manager at City (2016 -2019) before taking over at Arsenal, so the pair know each other well. And the fact he’s willing to leave Guardiola for his former No.1 speaks volumes about how he’s been treated.

Jesus scored 13 goals with 12 assists from 41 games this season, so he still had an important role under Pep. The 25-year-old played nearly half of his games in a makeshift wide role, however, and was substituted on or substituted off in 25 matches.

Arsenal have bid close to £30m but can land Jesus’ signature if they pay up to £50m. With the Brazilian international being out of contract in 2023, however, City will need to cash in this summer rather than risk losing Jesus for nothing next year.

The Gunners won’t be in the Champions League next season and had offers from Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, but Arteta appears to have sold the North London project to Jesus.
