Man City player enjoyed two fantastic moments in two days [Opinion]

Kalvin Phillips has endured a disappointing debut season at Manchester City, struggling for fitness and playing time, but he made his long-awaited return to the matchday squad in Wednesday’s EFL Cup win over Chelsea.

The 26-year-old was introduced from the bench in the 50th minute and saw out the game without issue. Pep Guardiola said days ago that Phillips would feature, so it was a fantastic moment to see him back on the pitch.

His substitute appearance wasn’t even the best piece of recent news, however, as Phillips learned on Thursday that he’d made the England squad for November’s 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The 26-year-old has made only four appearances in all competitions this season, amassing 53 minutes of football, but Gareth Southgate gave him the nod in midfield as he deems it a necessary gamble.

Phillips missed nine Premier League games in 2020/21 due to a shoulder injury and calf problem, and he missed 18 Premier League games in 2021/22 due to a long-term hamstring issue, so he does have a history of injuries.

Guardiola talked up the prospect of Phillips playing in the World Cup, but he might benefit from being eased back into competitive football. Nevertheless, it’s good news for City that he’s back and chosen for the international tournament, so fans will be hoping he can put in good performances.
