Man City player hasn’t convinced Pep Guardiola to start against Brentford [Opinion]

Sergio Gomez was given a rare start for Manchester City in Wednesday’s EFL Cup clash with Chelsea but wasn’t at his best as the Sky Blues won 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

The 22-year-old turned over the ball a few times but lost the majority of his duels and aerial battles. Gomez also lost possession more than any of his teammates, so Pep Guardiola won’t have been convinced to start him against Brentford on Saturday.

Gomez has made 10 appearances since joining from RSC Anderlecht over the summer, notching one assist. The Spanish U21 international hasn’t started a Premier League game this season, instead being given opportunities in the cup competitions, so it’s clear Guardiola doesn’t trust him yet.

Joao Cancelo is City’s first-choice left-back, but Nathan Ake or Aymeric Laporte may get the nod in his absence before Gomez as the latter has been an unused substitute in their last four league outings. He played for 70 minutes in a dead rubber European game but didn’t vindicate the decision.

Gomez was brought in to replace Oleksandr Zinchenko who joined Arsenal this summer, but he’s not commanding a regular place in the starting eleven. The 22-year-old has to be patient for opportunities and might end his debut season as a backup option unless injury strikes.
