Man City player impresses v Tottenham, Pep Guardiola will be delighted with form [Opinion]

Riyad Mahrez was the difference as Manchester City came from 2-0 down to win 4-2 against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday, scoring two goals and making one assist in the second half.

City went into the break with a 2-0 deficit, but Mahrez was one of a few players that came out firing after the restart to turn the game on its head. He’s having a fine run of form and Pep Guardiola will be delighted with his contribution.

In the 51st minute, Mahrez jinked past one defender on the right flank and whipped in a cross that wasn’t dealt with, resulting in Julian Alvarez scoring from close range.

Minutes later, the 31-year-old whipped in a cross that Erling Haaland headed home. Mahrez then turned scorer from a tight angle after working an opening with tricky footwork.

He bagged his second on the break at the death, chipping over Hugo Lloris to cap a brilliant performance. Against Tottenham, Mahrez had four shots with 50% hitting the target, created three chances, was fouled three times and whipped in 12 crosses with 25% finding a teammate.

The Algerian international has made 24 appearances in all competitions, scoring 10 goals with three assists. He should start against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday. Mahrez has three goals and two assists from his last four league games, so it’s no wonder Guardiola keeps playing him.
