Man City player must be patient for opportunities after making mistake [Opinion]

|

Despite playing in three of Manchester City’s four Champions League outings this season, Sergio Gomez won’t feature against Borussia Dortmund in Tuesday night’s penultimate group game due to suspension.

The 22-year-old picked up a straight red card for denying a goalscoring opportunity in City’s 0-0 draw with FC Copenhagen, but he’s not featured in the Premier League since making the mistake.

Gomez has made eight appearances in all competitions but hasn’t played since the Champions League stalemate on October 11. He was sent off after 30 minutes, was an unused substitute in City’s 1-0 defeat to Liverpool on October 16 and in their 3-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on October 22.

Guardiola didn’t start Gomez in the league, but he did bring him off the bench in games that City were leading comfortably – six minutes in the 4-2 win over Crystal Palace, 22 minutes in the 6-0 win over Nottingham Forest, nine minutes in the 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, 49 minutes in the 6-3 win over Manchester United and 20 minutes in the 4-0 win over Southampton.

Gomez played a full 90 minutes in the 4-0 win over Sevilla and 5-0 win over Copenhagen, but he blew it in the return fixture and may be paying the price.

After Dortmund, City lock horns with Leicester City on Saturday, so the Spanish U21 international might have an opportunity to feature if the Sky Blues are comfortable.

Pep is still including Gomez in the squad for domestic games, so he’s unlikely to hold a grudge if his attitude and application in training is on point.
