Man City player ‘will make decision’ on future this summer, Guardiola ‘wants him to stay’

Fernandinho has an uncertain future at Manchester City this summer as he’s out of contract in the coming months and will turn 37 when the campaign comes to a close.

The Brazilian international plays a supporting role under Pep Guardiola, but Fabrizio Romano says the City manager ‘wants him to stay’ another year. Fernandinho will be allowed to ‘make a decision’ on his future, however, so his contract situation may not be resolved until the season ends.

Signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013, Fernandinho has made 373 appearances in all competitions, scoring 25 goals with 32 assists. He was a regular at the Etihad Stadium up until the end of 2019/20 and has since played second fiddle to Rodri.

Fernandinho does seem happy at City and does still play in a lot of games despite being cover, so he wouldn’t spend long periods without getting opportunities. The 36-year-old has made 23 appearances across the board this season and has been in the squad for every Premier League game.

City are expected to sign a replacement defensive-midfielder to succeed Fernandinho, but they might pause their search if he stays on for another 12 months.
