According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have entered the race for long-time Man City defensive target Milan Skriniar – potentially giving the Sky Blues some tough competition to land the €70 million (£61.9 million) stalwart.
Skriniar, who has started 24 games for current club Inter Milan this season, registering an impressive 92.3% pass accuracy from the back as per WhoScored, is reportedly now on Barcelona’s radar as they look to secure a deal for the centre-half along with striker Lautaro Martinez.
Who should Man City sign this summer?
Catalans defender Samuel Umtiti is also at the centre of the Nerazzurri’s transfer plans this summer, so much so that manager Antonio Conte could use both Skriniar and Martinez to land the Frenchman according to this Mundo Deportivo piece.
This could be a devastating blow to City who are reportedly on the look out for a world class central defender to plug gaping holes at the back, exacerbated by injuries to star man Aymeric Laporte and the inconsistent form of both Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones.
Manager Pep Guardiola has been forced to draft Fernandinho into a centre-back role, arguably leaving the space in front of our back four exposed due to the Brazilian’s absence from his usual position.
The 6ft 1 colossus would potentially be the ideal signing for us, but Barcelona’s latest interest could scupper our chances of landing the Slovakian.
Whether or not we decide to challenge the Camp Nou outfit remains to be seen, but one thing could be certain, we need to acquire defensive depth this summer.
