Man City suffer blow in pursuit of 33-goal star as Chelsea enter race for signature

|

Manchester City have been linked with a move for Erling Haaland as a long-term replacement for Sergio Aguero, but their pursuit for the 20-year-old has suffered a blow as 90min say Chelsea have entered the race for his signature.

Haaland has shone at Borussia Dortmund in 2020 (33 goals and six assists in 32 games) and is regarded as one of the best attainable strikers in the world, so it’s not surprising that City have competition.

Whether Chelsea have enough money available after signing Kai Havertz (£72m), Timo Werner (£47.7m) and Hakim Ziyech (£36m) over the summer remains to be seen, however.

90min say that City consider themselves favourites to sign Haaland due to their links with father Alf-Inge who made 41 appearances for the Citizens, but he won’t come cheap.

Dortmund paid £18m for Erling in January and Transfermarkt say his market value has since risen to £90m. CIES Football Observatory estimate his asking price would be around €150m-€200m (£135.5m-£180.7m), so City might have to break their transfer record (Kevin De Bruyne from Vfl Wolfsburg for £68.4m) to land their top target.

Chelsea might be outpriced for Haaland, let alone City, but 90min hint that a departure could be on the cards in 2021 regardless.
