Man City tipped to sell ‘special player’ for a ‘massive price tag’ after recent comments

|

Bernardo Silva has been linked with a move away from Barcelona all summer, but it appeared the Catalans would give up on trying to sign him as Pep Guardiola refused to sell the 28-year-old. He issued a public ‘hands-off’ warning and wasn’t in the market for a replacement, so that seemed to be the end of the transfer saga.

But Silva has been dropped to the bench for both of Manchester City’s Premier League games this season and recently admitted in an interview that he could leave amid interest from Barca. Silva told ESPN (h/t Fabrizio Romano) that City ‘know what he wants’, so Noel Whelan is adamant that he’ll be sold before the transfer window shuts.

He told Football Insider: “It could be a turnaround of the old guard at City. They’ve gotten rid of a few players who have been there for a while now and bringing in a fresh, hungry group. City will do what is right by the player, and vice versa. I’m sure both parties are open to a transfer.

“But he’s one of the best in the world – and they won’t be letting him go to a Champions League rival without a massive price tag on his head. He deserves that, he’s a special midfield player. Barcelona need to find the money first. If they can, then I’m sure Man City will listen to offers – they’re very professional in the way they go about things.

“I’m sure there’ll have been open-air talks about where all parties stand. Man City do their business very well.” But regardless of whether Silva wants a move to Barcelona, it remains to be seen how the Catalans will put up the money to procure his signature.

They’re in financial disarray and recently sold 25% of their in-house TV company to register four of their new signings for the new season. Silva set City back £43m in 2017, has three years left on his deal at the Etihad and earns £150k-per-week in wages, so he won’t come cheap.
