Manchester City have been on the hunt for a left-back this summer as Benjamin Mendy has struggled with fitness, form and playing time while Oleksandr Zinchenko isn’t good enough to fill his position.

The Citizens have been linked with Bayern Munich’s David Alaba and Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico without making much progress, forcing them to stick with Mendy and Zinchenko until January.

City could return for Tagliafico when the winter transfer window, but they’ve been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Alaba, as Sportmediaset say Juventus could sign the 5ft 9in defender on a free transfer next year.

Alaba has made 389 appearances in all competitions since joining from Austria Wien in 2008, scoring 31 goals with 49 assists. He mostly operates at centre-back for Bayern but can still play on the left for club and country.

The 28-year-old has one year remaining on his deal at the Allianz Arena and Sportmediaset don’t believe he’s willing to sign an extension, so he’ll be granted a departure at the next available opportunity.

Alaba’s market value with Transfermarkt is £58.5m while Bayern’s valuation of him was €60m-€80m (£54.5m-£72.6m) back in June, but his asking price will dramatically fall as his contract runs down. Can we beat out Juventus?
