Despite winning the Premier League title with the best defensive record (26 goals conceded from 38 games and 21 clean sheets kept) and having four centre-backs in the first-team, Calciomercato say Manchester City are looking to bolster their backline this summer.

Pep Guardiola is reportedly interested in Matthijs de Ligt but may have to battle Manchester United for the Juventus defender. The 22-year-old has an uncertain future in Turin after a disappointing season and breakdown in contract talks, but it remains to be seen if City actually want him.

The Sky Blues have Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte, John Stones and Nathan Ake at their disposal, so they surely won’t sign another centre-back unless an existing player leaves. Ake looks the most likely to be offloaded, but he may not have suitors after struggling for playing time.

De Ligt joined Juve on a five-year deal from Ajax in 2019 and has gone on to make 117 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals with three assists. The £63m-rated Dutch international has been a regular for the Old Lady but his future is in doubt while he questions the club’s ambition.
