Despite John Stones being a regular at centre-back for Manchester City this season and impressing when called upon by Pep Guardiola, Javier Parra Pena of Fichajes believes he has an uncertain future as his manager ‘doesn’t trust’ him.
The report suggests City could sign a replacement centre-back this summer so they can better push for the Premier League title next season. There’s no way Stones would be moved on, however, as he’s performed well for City while missing just one league game since mid-October. Selling makes little sense.
Stones joined the Sky Blues from Everton in 2016 and has gone on to make 212 appearances in all competitions, scoring 13 goals with four assists. The England international has three-and-a-half years remaining on his deal at the Etihad Stadium too, so it’s not as if City are obligated to cash in.
Stones is too important for Guardiola to sell, so Pena’s claim doesn’t seem likely. City may have a more fervent need to strengthen their midfield in the coming months as Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva have uncertain futures.
