Man City won’t sign 21 y/o left-winger despite report claiming an ‘interest’

According to Fichajes, Manchester City are ‘interested’ in Álex Baena – a 21-year-old left-winger who plays for Villarreal and has enjoyed a bright start to the season.

Baena has scored six goals with two assists from 10 appearances for the Yellow Submarine, attracting the interest of Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool, but it’s hard to see City making a move as he wouldn’t improve the squad.

The Spanish U21 international, who can operate in any position across the front three, has made 31 appearances in all competitions for Villarreal, scoring eight goals with eight assists.

Baena spent last season on loan at Girona, scoring five goals with six assists from 38 games in La Liga 2, so he’s still inexperienced at the top level. The 21-year-old has scored three goals without starting a league game in 2022/23, but it’s still early days.

Baena doesn’t have a full top-flight campaign under his belt and Guardiola has Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva to choose from, so City aren’t likely to replace any of their attacking quartet for the Spaniard despite Fichajes’ claim.
