Manchester City have been linked with a move for Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar who could be available on a free transfer next summer as his contract is up in 2023, but Pep Guardiola is overstocked in his position, so he won’t bring in another centre-back while five are on the books.

City recently added Manuel Akanji to a backline that already featured Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte, Nathan Ake and John Stones, so it makes little sense bringing in a sixth centre-back to fight for only two starting places.
Before Akanji joined and when Ake was linked with a departure from City, a move for Skriniar made sense. But the Sky Blues’ defensive options should stay the same now.
Skriniar won’t be available until the end of the season as he’s still contracted to Inter for another year, so Guardiola wouldn’t be planning to sign him unless he had plans to axe an existing player.
Ake nearly left over the summer but has played regularly when fit, so there’s little chance he’ll be moved on now. That means City don’t need to add to their options with Skriniar, so Tottenham and Chelsea are free to make a move.
